“I still have to find something for my wife and daughter," said Elmar Arabit who’s visiting from Australia.  “There’s no planning.  I just wander around and look for something.  It's so hard.”

“I’m shopping for me, myself, and I.  I’m looking for Big Island Cookies.  I want to buy five boxes,” said Ann Baffico, who’s visiting from San Francisco.

Vendors are seeing the usual frantic shopping habits of many, but also noticing some early signs of a less than merry retail season.

Sales at stores across the nation have fallen for the third consecutive week according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 stores.

Managers at Hawaiian Island Creations, one of the biggest surf shops in the state have noticed similar patterns.

“It has been slow, so we’re giving a lot of discounts and deals to get shoppers to start shopping,” said  Mitch McEwen, a manager at Hawaiian Island Creations.

Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent this week, compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak.

The Ala Moana Center will be closed on Christmas Day.
