WAHIAWA, Hawaii -

A pilot and his passenger were able to remove themselves from the wreckage of a plane that crashed and wound up upside-down in a Wahiawa pineapple field Tuesday.

According to public information officials with the Federal Fire Department, the crash happened around 5:15 p.m. about one mile south of Wheeler Army Air Field in Central Oahu.

Officials say the civilian fixed wing, single-engine plane reported engine trouble to the control tower at Wheeler before crash landing.

Both the pilot and his passenger were able to remove themselves from the wreckage and did not report any serious injuries. The two were treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Honolulu Police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
