KANEOHE, Hawaii -

Two hikers are safe and sound after being stranded on the Ko'olau Mountain range early Monday.

"This shouldn't be happening at all," said Kaneohe resident Frank Torres.

Torres says he gets annoyed when he sees hikers go someplace where they don't belong, and then ask for help getting back out.

Fire officials say they were alerted around 2 a.m. Monday that a man and a woman were stranded near the Stairway To Heaven trail.

"Too many young people going up.  Inexperienced.  That cost these fire men to risk their lives to try and save them," said Torres.

The hiker's sister says she was worried when her brother didn't come home.  He had left his phone on the kitchen table.

"The girl he was with brought her phone, but it was about to die.  But, she was able to call her friend this morning and let them know they were still alive," said Kelli McDougle.

At around 6:30 a.m., fire officials rescued both hikers using Chopper One at Kaneohe District Park.

Officials say the couple started their hike on the town side of the mountain near Triple Army Medical Center.  But, hikers we spoke with say that trail doesn't actually connect with the Stairway To Heaven.

"I know I did the Stairways To Heaven so many times.  You can't get there from town.  They should have never been up there at all," said Torres.

As for family and friends, they say through this rescue was unanticipated, it's a relief.

"It's good to see that they are both safe," said McDougle.

Fire officials say the hikers will not be fined because they were not rescued from a restricted area.  They were actually found on the Ko'olau mountain range and not on the actual Stairway To Heaven trail.
