Spa worker says she was fired for not receiving Brazilian bikini wax

A Wexford woman is suing the spa where she used to work, saying it tried to force her to receive a Brazilian bikini wax from her co-workers.

In October, certified aesthetician Jennifer Finley said she had just started training at the European Wax Center on McKnight Road in Ross Township.

She said her trainer informed a group of four or five new employees that they would have to perform a Brazilian wax on each other. A Brazilian style wax removes all of a person’s pubic hair.

“I think I was the oldest. I feel like they were young and they just really needed a job and they just went along with it,” Finley said. “But, really, none of them wanted to go along with it.”

“She was asked to expose her most private parts to her co-workers, to their view and their touch, and to have the physical view of her genitals altered,” said Janice Russell, Finley’s attorney.  “And she did not feel that that was legal.”

When Finley refused, she said the trainer told her to talk to the store owner, Ryan Glastein.

Finley said, “He just let me go.  He said, 'I'm sorry things didn't work out,' and he let me go.”

She is suing the store because she said Glastein fired her for refusing to get the wax.

“I was more than shocked. I was humiliated,” Finley said, “I felt what they were doing was illegal. It was very embarrassing.”

Glastein did not return a request from Channel Four Action News for an interview.

Finley is suing for damages, back pay, and attorneys’ fees. The suit alleges wrongful termination, retaliation, discrimination, and sexual harassment.
