State announces Lei Court candidates
The Department of Parks and Recreation announced the candidates for the 86th Annual Lei Court Selection Event Thursday.
The four contestants vying for this year’s Na Kupuna category (55+ years of age) will be: Louise Kekahilinaniopauahi Wade Alina, Pualani Evangeline Kauila, Lydia U‘ilani Fu Kuie‘e, and Carolyn Olivia “Skip” Kaonohilani Tomiyama.
Each contestant will be scored based on the skills of lei making, poise and personality, speaking in both English and Hawaiian, and hula ‘auana (modern hula).
Admission to the event is free and open to the public.
The first Lei Day was held in 1927 with a celebration in downtown Honolulu. Over time it grew as more and more people began to wear lei on May Day.
The first lei queen, Nina Bowman, was crowned by Mayor Charles Arnold in Honolulu in 1928.
