Current and former lawmakers will join together to celebrate Hawaii's 55th anniversary of statehood at the state legislature’s first session of the year.

About 40 former senators and 50 former House members who have served since 1959 are expected to take part in the celebration.

Key items lawmakers are expected to discuss this session include increasing the state budget reserves, legalization of marijuana for recreational use, and the increase of the state's minimum wage.

These debates will take shape as lawmakers, and Governor Neil Abercrombie, face election challenges in November 2014.

The Legislature’s session is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend opening floor sessions, but seating is limited. Chamber galleries will open at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday.
