A man in his 50s died after he was surfing in waters at Ala Moana Bowls Thursday.

HONOLULU -

A 49-year-old man died after surfing at Ala Moana Bowls Thursday, according to the medical examiner.

The man was identified as Richard Sasaki.

Rescue crews were called at around 2:30 p.m.

Emergency Medical Services crews say lifeguards found the surfer floating in the water.

Witnesses we spoke with say they saw him near a pair of rocks before rescuers arrived.

"So, I saw the body and then I saw the lifeguards come around the corner with the jet ski and pick him up and take him around the corner to the lifeguards in the lagoon," said Haleiwa resident Makana Pang.

The man was picked up by an Ocean Safety watercraft and transported to Magic Island where lifeguards performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

The man was initially hospitalized in extremely critical condition.

There was a high surf advisory for all south-facing shores of all islands until 6 p.m. Thursday.
