Surge is on to get gun registrations and permits
In Honolulu talk about increasing gun control is prompting a surge in gun registrations and permits.
There was a long line Friday at the firearms unit at the Honolulu Police Department. The line to register and get permits for guns was wrapped around the building since 2 a.m.
Gun owner Christopher Pone said, "We seen the line being long. We decided to come early, we didn't realize it was going to be this long."
Some knew they were only going to be moving forward inch by inch, and brought chairs.
"Everyone is afraid because of the law changes or what's going on. Especially after the shooting, because everyone's panicking that all the gun laws are going to change," said Pone.
President Barack Obama is calling for legislation to help reduce gun violence, and supports taking aim at assault weapons. However, some gun owners don't see the point of any new restrictions.
"The idea that restricting some type of firearm is going to keep people safe. Well, what if we restrict alcohol to only beer and wine and no hard alcohol, people are still going to get into accidents," said gun owner George Miranda.
Kathy Novak is willing to wait five hours in the line. A first-time gun buyer, she was putting off purchasing one for a while, until now.
"When the Newtown, Connecticut shooting occurred and then I heard all this talk about gun limitations, I thought I better go and do it," said Novak.
And that's what many others thought, so feeding the meter is a regular sight around the police department. Novak looks at the bright side -- she's getting to know fellow gun owners.
"Everybody is running back and forth to the parking meter. But the people in line are very nice and are all holding spaces," said Novak.
According to HPD there have been more than 23,000 registrations so far this year.
Officers expect the line to be long next week also.
