PANA'EWA, Hawaii -

Police on the Big Island are searching for a suspected car thief who led police on an overnight chase near Old Stainback Highway.

According to police, officers attempted to stop a black Toyota Tacoma just after midnight Thursday on Highway 11 in Pana'ewa. The truck was reported stolen from Hilo in July.

The driver sped away from police and was later found off Old Stainback Highway in the Pana'ewa Rainforest. After becoming lodged in the brush during that pursuit, the suspect fled on foot into the wilderness.

Police shutdown that portion of the highway while they searched for the suspected thief.

During a search of the truck, police heard gunshots from the area of the forest where it was believed that the suspect fled.

Police continued their search Thursday but have thus far been unable to locate the suspect.

Once the area was deemed safe, the Old Stainback Highway was reopened at 1 p.m.

Police ask anyone with information about the identity of the suspect or his location to call the Police Department's non-emergency line at 935-3311.
