Asofitu Fio, 30 years-old of Waianae, is charged with four counts of sexual assault as well as other crimes. All the crimes he is charged with are in connection with one sexual assault case. A state judge confirmed his bail at $1 million during Monday's hearing.

Court documents indicate that Fio was linked to a rape committed on December 1 through DNA evidence collected from the victim.

According to the documents, Fio forced his way into a woman's Cedar Street apartment after she opened the door to check who had rung the door bell.

He then sexually assaulted her several times, and forced her to wipe away evidence of the assault before leaving. However, a saliva sample was collected from the victim's body during an examination.

Police first questioned Fio after he was spotted near the victim's apartment during a surveillance operation, according to the documents. He was approached by police after it was determined that he fit the description given by the victim.

A day later, police got permission to take a DNA sample from Fio while he was his workplace on Keeaumoku in Makiki.

On Friday Dec. 13, lab results indicated that there was a match between the sample taken from Fio and the evidence collected from the victim's body.

Later that day, police located Fio at his brother's home in the Waena Apartments on Vineyard Boulevard. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary, kidnapping and three sex assault offenses.

During a press conference announcing the arrest the following day, police indicated that enough similarities existed between this rape case and two other sexual assault cases in the last six months.

One of those cases were reported near Makaloa Street, the other in Liliha. Both of them took place in the morning in area apartments.

Fio was charged with the crimes Sunday night.

About two weeks ago, HPD released sketches of the suspect, asking the public for help. HPD also consulted with the FBI, scouring neighborhoods and data bases.
