A Big Island surfer whose legs were bitten by a shark is recovering from his wounds Monday. At the same time, a German tourist who lost her arm after a shark bit it off in Maui on Aug 14 remains in "very critical condition."
16-year-old Jimmy Ulualoha Napeahi, known as "Ulu-boy" by those close to him, was bitten Sunday around 1:30 p.m. off Pohoiki Beach in Pahoa, Hawaii.
Family members say Napeahi is a prolific surfer, sponsored by Da Hui, and was looking forward to surfing at the Duke's Oceanfest HIC Pro Junior surfing competition being held Monday in Waikiki.
DLNR officials posted shark warning signs around the Pohoiki Beach area in response to the bite. The signs remained up Monday, though many surfers took to the waters.
This incident is one of four recent shark attacks off Hawaiian waters within the past three weeks.
On Wednesday Aug. 14 a German tourist lost her arm while snorkeling 50 yards offshore at White Rock beach in Maui.
