WAIMEA, Hawaii -

A Tennessee man was found unresponsive Wednesday afternoon while snorkeling in waters off Nualolo Kai State Park along the Na Pali Coast, according to Kauai county officials.

The man was identified as Manuel Benegas of Brentwood.

The 48-year-old man was part of charter group that had stopped in the area to allow patrons to swim and snorkel.  According to reports, fellow swimmers found the man in distress at around 2:40 p.m. and brought him to shore.

Bystanders performed CPR until rescue crews arrived to the scene shortly after 3 p.m.  Rescuers then placed the man into a Stokes litter and transported him to Waimea Canyon Ball Park.  Awaiting medics then transferred him to Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This is Kauai’s twelfth drowning so far this year.
