A murder trial is underway in the death of a man stabbed at Ala Moana Center. It's been nearly a year since Brent Keola Kanae was found dead in a shopping center stairwell. As KITV4's Cam Tran reports, the man accused of killing him was someone he considered a close friend.

HONOLULU -

Trial for a man accused in a deadly stabbing at Ala Moana Center began Friday.

Prosecutors say Jacob Le stabbed his friend, Brent Keola Kanae, three times in the chest -- one in the heart; the second in the lungs; and the third in an artery.

A witness who found Kanae in the stairwell saw Le at the mall near the stairwell when she was running around trying to get help.

Le's attorney says his client didn't do it and the killer is still out there.  The defense team says police used questionable tactics to get a confession out of Le.

Kanae was found in a stairwell near the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on Oct. 3, 2012.

We will have more on this story tonight on KITV4 News at 5, 6 and 10.
