HONOLULU -

1,000 homes in Kuliouou lost power Saturday morning when a truck smashed into a utility pole.

It was a "loud boom like a bomb or a big gun going off" qhwn the truck hit the pole, said neighbor Bobbi Kaaihili.

When the sun came up, neighbors saw high voltage power lines down, scattered wires and utility poles on the street and surrounding cars. The truck hit the pole at around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Once the first pole went down, three more followed. Neighbors awakened by the crash went out of their homes and saw the driver trying to leave.

"He was trying to reverse the truck but the lines that had fallen in behind him were keeping him from moving," said Hauoli Reeves.

Utility workers closed the street to clean up the mess and get the utility poles back up to restore power to customer.

All four poles were replaced and power was restored to customers by 2:45 p.m.
