Overnight collision in Kihei Wednesday.

KIHEI, Hawaii -

Two Maui motorists are fighting for their lives Thursday morning after being involved in a tumultuous overnight collision in Kihei.

According to Maui police, the collision happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Piikea Avenue and Piilani Highway.

The collision happened when a grey 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup truck collided with the right side of a 1995 Honda Civic that was making a left turn onto the highway, heading the same north-bound direction as the truck.

The collision resulted in the truck overturning, coming to rest on the passenger side on the highway. The driver of that truck, a 30-year-old man from Kihei, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The two occupants of the Honda were not as fortunate. Both the 20-year-old male driver and his 19-year-old female passenger were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Traffic officials say those two were wearing their seatbelts and that the airbags in the truck were deployed as a result of the collision.

Investigators are not sure whether speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.
