Henry McShane, who some believed to be behind the brawl that injured the University of Hawaii's Ben Jay, now has the backing of the school's athletics director.

Mcshane is notjust a University of Hawaii fan, he is a fanatic follower of UH sports teams.

"Throughout the game he gets into it. He's very passionate about sports and especially about UH," said his daughter Hiilani McShane.

At the Rainbow Wahine Classic, McShane gave the head coach of West Virginia an earful.

"I never said anything about the girls or his coaching. Every time there was a foul he was crying, and I would say, 'You're crying coach!'" stated McShane.

"By all reports nothing he said was profane. It was typical game banterbut you have to recognize sometimes it creates a volatile situation when you have opposing fans sitting right next to you," said Jay.

Mcshane was in the middle of the Mountaineer fans and said the heckling escalated after the game between him and a West Virginia assistant coach.

"I said, 'You don't belong in the Big 12'and that got them going. He said come down here and say that. So I went down there to tell him you don't belong in the Big 12 cause you beat us by three points. I went down the stairs, I went to raise my hand and say 'You don't belong' and that's as far as I went. The whole group 40-50 fans just piled me," said McShane.

Mcshane stated he crawled out from the mob bruised and battered but was more upset his reputation had taken a big hit as he was being blamed for starting the brawl.

"I threw no punch. They said I started the fight. I didn't even have a chance to turn around and see who hit me. I was on the ground like that," said McShane.

Like those who rushed in to protect McShane that Sunday night, Athletics Director Ben Jay came to his defense and said other witness accounts supported his version of events. Jay also has a new title for the UH fan: victim.

"It wasn't the assistant coach, it wasn't Henry, it was the fans from West Virginia that started the brawl and so, Henry is a victim in this," stated Jay.

Jay said because of the brawl the school will make sure fans know proper sportsmanship policy and security will be stepped up so this type of incident doesn't happen again.
