NORMAN, Okla. -

The University of Oklahoma is investigating the rapid spread of an explicit photo of sorority women.

The image shows topless women smiling and posing for the camera with expletives written on their bodies.

The image has been shared through text messaging across campus and beyond.

OU spokesperson Catherine Bishop told KOCO 5 the University is looking into incident.

"The university is still gathering the facts and reviewing the information," said Bishop. "It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."

Defense attorney David Slane said sharing the image could result in civil and even criminal charges.

"You can be held liable if you damage a person's reputation," said Slane. "You can be prosecuted for distributing privacy things. If one of these girls is underage [you] would have then committed a felony for possessing and distributing child pornography."

"When these things come across, you just need to delete them and move on."
