Waialae Ave. construction extended to July
Over deadline and over budget with no clear end in sight.
The city has extended the reconstruction and repaving work along Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki.

Road crews were supposed to finish the project by last December, but the city says the project has been plagued with problems. The primary problem has been sink holes and soft spots dotting the underbelly of a water-logged road.
"This is exceptional. The only other time we've seen this many soft spots actually is probably in Wahiawa on one of our jobs, but other than that, we haven't seen this many," said Chris Takashige, director of the Department of Design and Construction.
Takashige says they are now using a different, more expensive type of treatment in an effort to better stabilize the ground.
Earlier this year, the city allotted an extra $1 million to cover the work, bumping the cost to $10.5 million.
The city is now hoping to have the road completed by mid-July.
