Waikiki Sheraton to host first same-sex weddings

The same-sex marriage will soon be legal. Hawaii weddings will be bigger business than ever.

HONOLULU -

Before you can say your “I do's” your wedding actually starts here at the marriage license office.

The one in the Sheraton Waikiki might not be romantic, but it's convenient.

More than 1000 couples have used it in the past year many from overseas.

"It's all by appointment only. You come in, and you get your license and within a hour you are married," said General Manager Kelly Saunders.

“The whole process was just so easy,” said Thomas Moore and Michelle Bustos.

The couple from Canada started the process online and then stopped into the Waikiki office to finalize plans for their wedding Wednesday.

"It's nice to be able to have the convenience. We walked to here from our hotel this morning," said Bustos.

Now the office is ready for the next wave of marriages same-sex weddings.

The Dec. 2nd weddings will make history. And money.

"People think about if I am going to get married,why not do it in Hawaii? This just opens up a realm of possibilities.  We are just looking at what that future is and capitalizing on both providing an amazing experience in Waikiki, and the revenues that are going to be generated for our properties, and the State of Hawaii overall," said Saunders.

The office will open its doors to couples wanting to get married at midnight.

Three were the first to legalize their relationships in civil unions here in Hawaii.

Donna and Monica, Gary and Paul, and Izasha and Sara Lynn will be among at least six couples who plan to marry Dec. 2nd.

Details are being finalized for the big event.

Other same-sex couples who don't want to wait until the state health department opens its doors at 9 a.m. Monday can join the party and celebrate the wedding they waited so long for.
