Partial evacuation near shopping center due to unattended backpack
Honolulu police say part of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki was evacuated Friday afternoon due to unattended backpack.
Police closed down Kalakaua Avenue at Lewers Street at around 3:20 p.m.
Police say they responded to the scene at around 2 p.m.
A 29-year-old man was arrested for terroristic threatening in the second degree, according to police.
Police say the man's behavior prompted the evacuation.
It turned out that there was just "junk" in the bag, according to authorities.
Kalakaua Avenue was set to reopen shortly after 5 p.m.
In light of the recent events in Boston, Honolulu police say they are on high alert and treating every situation as if it was real.
