Fire officials are investigating what caused a blaze that destroyed an apartment at Royal Kunia Gardens Wednesday night.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii -

A house fire heavily damaged the lower apartment of a two-story townhouse at the Royal Kunia Gardens complex off Hanauna Street.

Honolulu fire officials say they received a call about the single-bedroom apartment fire around 10:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they found that two neighbors had the fire under contained with garden hoses. Fire officials then relieved the neighbors to completely extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported. The family living above the apartment on fire safely evacuated the premises. Occupants of the unit were not home either.

The townhouse has been determined to be uninhabitable with 50 percent of it damaged. It suffered $40,000 in damage; $25,000 to the structure and $15,000 to the contents.

Fire investigators are still on scene determining the origin and cause of the fire.
