LIHUE, Hawaii -

The first day of school is postponed for some students because of a brown water advisory.

Water department officials say the following schools are closed:

  • Kauai High School
  • Chiefess School
  • Kamakahelei Middle School
  • King Kaumualii Elementary School
  • Wilcox Elementary Schools

The closures come after the county issued a warning for residents in specific Lihue and Hanamaulu neighborhoods to boil water.

The advisory revealed that soil had entered a water line that services the neighborhoods of Molokoa, Isenberg and Hanamaulu.
Water officials are flushing out affected waterlines.

Residents are being advised to flush outdoor water hoses until the water appears clear and boil water until further notice.
