CUDAHY, Wis. -

A grandfather in Cudahy wants police protection for a mother duck and nine eggs.

Bob Kotlowski is a retired steelworker. He and his wife, Jean, have been in Cudahy for 45 years.

Under a blue spruce he planted, which is now 60 feet tall, are the mother duck and her eggs. He said she leaves the nest twice each day.

“We decided to give each of the chicks, there are nine of them, a name,” he said. “We figured, Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do-do, Re-re and of course her name is Donna.”

The nest is close to the street and visible on all sides. The Department of Natural Resources told Kotlowski to not go near the duck or feed her because it might draw predators.

Kotlowski found that the duck’s brood will hatch about 28 days from when the last egg dropped -- one week from Saturday.

When they do, Cudahy police told Kotlowski to give them a call if the mother leads her ducklings toward nearby Pennsylvania Avenue.
