The fire at 91-1638 Laupai St. was reported just after 10:30 a.m, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.

Thirty-five firefighters responded and were able to extinguish the fire in less than 40 minutes.

The woman said she and her children were upstairs when she noticed smoke coming from the first floor, according to the fire captain on the scene.

The woman said she got her kids out and went back to the second floor to rescue numerous family pets.

The fire spread quickly and the woman was forced to climb out a window onto the roof of the first floor where she was helped down by neighbors, the captain said.

No injuries were reported but some of the pets didn't survive.

Damage estimates and a cause of the fire have not been determined.
