HONOLULU -

Former city councilman Gary Okino is apologizing for his passionate anti-gay remarks which cost him a spot on an ethics appeals board.

The day after KITV aired Okino's public comments that he was intolerant of homosexuality, Mayor Caldwell withdrew his name from consideration.

Okino had said he felt that gays are immoral and deviant.  A conservative Christian, he  was recommended by former Mayor Peter Carlisle.

Saturday, Okino says Mayor Caldwell's actions were appropriate.  In a statement to KITV, Okino said,

"To my gay brothers and sisters and their supporters, I deeply apologize if my words were hurtful rather than helpful. That was not my intent.  In my eagerness to express what we believe is right and what is wrong, I had forgotten that we truly do belong to a loving God, and that He also asks us to treat people with the love, reverence and dignity they deserve."
