Charles Djou
HONOLULU -

In his campaign to represent Hawaii in the U.S. House, Republican candidate Charles Djou says Congress needs more centrists like him.

The former congressman says there's a dearth of moderates in Washington.

Djou also says Hawaii would benefit from having a Republican in Congress because the states with bipartisan delegations are more effective.

He faces a long list of Democrats in the race to replace Democratic Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, who is running for U.S. Senate.

Political strategists say that voters may agree Djou's argument makes sense.  But they say he still faces an uphill battle in a heavily Democratic state.

With Republicans controlling the U.S. House and preparing to fight for a majority in the U.S. Senate, Djou thinks having a Republican in Congress could be beneficial for Hawaii.
