A public celebration will be held at the Honolulu Civic Center to celebrate what would have been the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye's 89th birthday.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell will be hosting Saturday's event but mayors from other counties will also pay tribute to Inouye's life and legacy.

Inouye died in December after serving Hawaii in Congress for more than 54 years.

Caldwell's office says a new kukui nut tree on civic center grounds will be dedicated in honor of Inouye.

Inouye's widow, Irene Hirano Inouye, and his former chief of staff, Jennifer Sabas, will speak at the event, which will be televised live on Olelo channel 49.

The band Hookena will perform his favorite song, Kaimana Hila. Zippy's is donating chili with Spam musubi, a favorite of the senator.
