HONOLULU -

ESPN is reporting that a friend of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man identified as the person behind Manti Te'o's girlfriend hoax, called her in December admitting to duping the Notre Dame football star.

The friend from church, a woman in her mid-20s., was interviewed by ESPN's "Outside The Lines" on the condition that she not be identified.

The woman said that Tuiasosopo called her crying saying he played a "game" on Te'o and it wasn't the first time he had done it.

"He (Ronaiah) told me that Manti was not involved at all, he was a victim... The girlfriend was a lie, the accident was a lie, the leukemia was a lie," said the woman.

Notre Dame and Te'o came out with statement on Wednesday that the Heisman finalist was the victim of a "cruel" joke.

The woman told ESPN that Tuiasosopo had used his female cousin to speak to Te'o over the phone.

"Outside The Lines" also spoke with two other people who said they have a cousin who had the same online hoax pulled on them by Tuiasosopo.
